We started building our cabin in 2019 on a secluded 4-acre lot, with 300 feet of waterfront on the Magnetawan River. We chose this property to create the feeling of camping in Algonquin... but with a real bed and a fireplace. Half of the waterfront is rapids, and the other half is a deep pool which is packed with small mouth bass.
The river can be explored above and below the rapids with a canoe or kayak. Upstream leads to civilization. Downstream leads into wilderness, including a large and powerful set of rapids called the Lower Burnt Chute. The property is located within walking distance of the Island Lake Forest and Barrens Conservation Reserve, with trails running throughout which are perfect for off road vehicles and mountain bikes. You can also enjoy campfires at the lookout, perched at the top of a 30-foot cliff overlooking the river.
The cabin is a 700 square foot off-grid log cabin with a composting toilet inside and an outhouse available a short distance away. The cabin includes battery powered pot lights and a small wood stove for heat. There are two bedrooms with a queen-sized bed in each (linens provided, or you can bring your own). The kitchen includes plenty of counter space, all cooking and eating utensils, and a sink for washing dishes. There is a dual propane/charcoal BBQ and a two-burner propane stovetop for cooking.
There is no refrigerator available but a cooler is provided at the cabin. Ice can be purchased from the store in Dunchurch. The neighbours on either side cannot be seen from the cabin, and there are no neighbours across the river, providing for a very peaceful and secluded getaway.
The goal we set out to achieve with our cabin was to create a space where we could keep the feel of Back-country camping and being outdoors, with the ease of having everything at your fingertips. We wanted to capture that feeling of adventure and simplicity, which is why we chose to keep the cabin off-grid.
We encourage anyone renting the cabin to take advantage of the unique features of the property, whether you are exploring, taking photos, fishing or just relaxing on the porch with a coffee in hand, listening to the sound of the rapids. On clear nights, take the opportunity to see a breathtaking view of the stars without the interference of city lights. We also have board games and playing cards available for those rainy days.
